Cadland Primary School Curriculum

All schools in England are guided by the ‘National Curriculum’, but are now free to develop their curriculum as creatively as they can. The Primary Curriculum is divided in to 2 sections: the Core Curriculum and the Foundation Subjects. The Core Curriculum consists of English, Maths, Science and more recently Information Communication Technology (ICT). At Cadland Primary, these subjects are often taught separately, mainly in the mornings, but skills gained are applied to theme work in the afternoon. You can find out more about our phonics and reading programme on our Reading page.
The Foundation Subjects for primary school children are History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Physical Education (PE), Music, Religious Education and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). At Cadland, we pride ourselves in designing cross-curricular units of work, which link skills from a number of different subjects together. We call these units ‘Themes’. Each Theme contains, what we describe as, a ‘Wow factor’ to really engage children in their learning and give them the desire to find out more.

For instance, in Year 1/2’s theme ‘Famous People’ each classroom contains its own tardis-like time machine, which presents to them each week objects belonging to a famous person. They then have to identify who the famous person is, even the Doctor Who music is used to add to the impact! In Year 5’s Theme ‘The Tudors’ the children create their own movies about Tudor Life and even re-enact a Tudor Banquet, Henry VIII attended this year!
Find out what themes are covered in each year group by downloading our Curriculum Overview.
Our most recent developments are in our PSHE curriculum, where as part of our ‘Healthy Schools’ Award, we are developing our Food Technology (cookery) curriculum. Download some of the recipes from our Food Tech Page
